TikTok is back online in the U.S. after less than a day of being banned by “Trump”

Trump
TikTok is facing complex issues in the U.S. and Europe, which are related to personal information security and international political impact.

It all started with TikTok being officially banned in the U.S. on the last day of President Jos Biden’s term before handing over the post to Donald Trump, who took a position again on January 20, 2025. The main reason for the ban was the concern about users’ personal information which is suspected that the information may be sent to China. The U.S. views it as a national security risk, making the TikTok application removed from the App Store and Play Store and unavailable to those who already have the app.

However, when Trump took office as president, he gave an interview to the media that he was considering “deferring” the ban on TikTok for 90 days, reasoning that this must be carefully considered as a key issue. On the first day of his duties, Trump issued an executive order to immediately suspend the ban, allowing TikTok to resume some parts of its functions in the U.S. in less than a day. However, there is a limitation that new users cannot download the app through the App Store and the Play Store.

TikTok also issued a message thanking Trump for helping the app return to provide services for more than 170 million U.S. users, indicating that the unbanning had a positive impact on Trump’s image in the public eye.

In addition to the U.S. issue, TikTok is facing problems in Europe. Noyb, an Austrian privacy organization, has filed a complaint against six Chinese companies, including TikTok, accusing them of illegally sending user data back to China in violation of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).  Sending the information out of the EU only can be done if the destination country has the same data protection standards as the EU, which China has failed to meet because it is regarded as a state that controls information strictly.

Noyb also called on related companies to stop sending data immediately and proposed a fine of up to 4% of their global revenues. The application was filed in four European countries and is currently under consideration.

In the U.S., TikTok has been partially resumed from Trump’s executive order, but no new downloads have been made yet. In Europe, the problem of cross-border data transmission is still underway, which is a key issue related to law, information security, and international politics.
