When planning a trip abroad, it’s not enough to just prepare your passport and travel itinerary. One important thing you should check in advance is the local laws. Something that seems normal in your home country might actually be illegal overseas and you may not even realize it. Here are 10 unusual laws that travelers should know before going abroad.

Japan – Don’t litter and don’t waste food

Japan is very strict about cleanliness. If you throw garbage in the wrong place, you may be fined. Leaving food uneaten in a restaurant is seen as disrespectful, and you might even be charged extra. Always throw trash in the proper bins and order only the amount of food you can finish.

Singapore – No chewing gum and no using others’ Wi-Fi

Chewing regular gum is banned in Singapore to keep the city clean. Also, connecting to someone else’s Wi-Fi without permission is considered a cybercrime. It can lead to both fines and even jail time.

Vietnam – Always wear a helmet

Riding a motorbike without a helmet is against the law and can result in a fine. For road safety, tourists should always wear a helmet, even for short trips.

Malaysia – No public displays of affection

Hugging or kissing in public can be seen as inappropriate and may go against the law, especially in areas with strong conservative culture

Australia – Don’t touch koalas

In some states, such as Queensland, there are laws that forbid touching or holding koalas. This is to protect the animals from stress.

United Kingdom – No drinking alcohol in public

In some cities, like London, drinking alcohol in public places is not allowed. If you break this rule, you may be fined or have your drink taken away.

Switzerland – No flushing toilets after 10 p.m.

In some residential buildings, flushing the toilet after 10 p.m. is not allowed to avoid disturbing neighbors. Breaking this rule could lead to complaints or even a fine.

Germany – Don’t run out of fuel on the Autobahn

Running out of fuel on the Autobahn is considered illegal and can lead to a fine. It’s seen as a safety risk because it may cause accidents.

Saudi Arabia – No taking photos without permission

Taking photos of people without their consent is considered a serious offense. This includes selfies with women, and it can result in a heavy fine.

“These laws may sound unusual to travelers, but they all have reasons for safety, order, and preserving local culture. Learning about local laws before your trip will help make your journey smooth, safe, and free from unexpected problems.”
