Mount Fuji Climbing Fee Collection
According to The Japan Times on May 22, Y. 2567, the Shizuoka prefectural government, one of the two prefectures where Mount Fuji is located, is considering collecting Mount Fuji charges from tourists who will climb Mount Fuji from the Shizuoka Prefecture side.
Usually, hikers who travel to the top of Mt. Fuji from Shizuoka Prefecture are asked to pay a voluntary fee of 1,000 yen (about 220 baht) to support the conservation and maintenance of the environment in the area.
However, there are three routes that you have to pay the fee first before climbing Mount Fuji: the Fujinomiya Trail, the Gotemba Trail, and the Subashiri Trail. The relevant authorities are considering three prices: 3,000 yen (approximately 670 baht), 4,000 yen (approximately 893 baht), and 5,000 yen (approximately 1,116 baht) per person.
The plan will set rules during the day and night for each route, such as from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. the next day at the Fujinomiya Trail. A bill will be submitted to the provincial council in February for enforcement in the summer of 2025.
Moreover, it also proposed guidelines that require people who want to climb the mountain to learn rules and guidelines in advance and prohibit hikers from using three hiking trails on the Shizuoka Prefecture side during the night, except those who have already booked mountain accommodations.
Why raise the fee for climbing Mt. Fuji?
The increased fee collection is aimed at reducing the number of tourists traveling to the 3,776-meter summit of Mount Fuji to maintain their environment and safety and prevent tourists from climbing the mountain at night when it is dangerous.
Mount Fuji is located in two prefectures, Shizuoka Prefecture and Yamanashi Prefecture. During the climbing season of 2024, the Yamanashi prefectural government has implemented measures to limit the number of people climbing Mount Fuji from the Yamanashi side to 4,000 per day and charge a fee for the first time at 2,000 yen (approximately 445 baht) per person. However, the Shizuoka prefectural government only applies the voluntary registration system. No registration regulations have been implemented yet.
The number of tourists visiting Mount Fuji during the climbing season of 2024 (from July to early September) totaled 204,000, a decrease of about 8% from the previous year.
