Prepare to fill-in ESTA System before going to Japan

As we all know that Japan is now opening its country after the COVID-19 pandemic, making lots of tourists traveling to Japan. Not only Thai people but tourists from other countries as well who come to Japan to travel, visit their relatives, including work in Japan. At present, there are still some people lurking as tourists, but the reality is that they are working and overstaying the specified period.
Therefore, the Japanese government has announced the launch of the ESTA system for foreign tourists to register before entering the country. Foreign tourists have to fill in the details of activities, accommodations, and traveling because Japan has been dealing with problems with illegal workers, including those who apply for tourism visas but come to work in Japan.
This system is the same as K-ETA for entering into Korea. This system is an online visa which is considered only a domestic travel and a short-term residence permit, but not considered as a visa. This license holder can use a driver’s license for tourism or business for a short period, but not more than 90 days. If they stay in Japan for more than 90 days to study or work, it must be a visa that clearly states that it has come in for a clear purpose such as work or come in for study.
Those who need ESTA before entering Japan are those who are exempt from short-term tourist visas. Currently, people from these 71 countries can travel to Japan for a business trip or to visit their relatives, but the purpose of registration must be informed. Then, the tourists’ blacklist will be checked.
The reason why the ESTA system has been tightened is because foreigners illegally entered Japan and overstayed their residence. In 2024, it was found that more than 79,000 foreigners were illegally staying in Japan, an increase of more than 20,000 from 10 years ago.
In Japan, many tourists are encouraged to enter the country because Japan is more focused on trade support. Still, many tourists secretly commit illegal matters, which are too many to control. Thus, the control measures are tightened to ensure they stay on schedule and tourists enter the country legally.
Even if we have an ESTA license, it doesn’t guarantee 100% to access Japan because Customs and Border Protection will also be the agency that checks the qualifications of travelers. Those who have plans to travel to Japan have to find more information before traveling, in case they have to prepare a document for the trip.
