Twegye Lee Hwang on 1,000 won banknotes
Lee Hwang was a well-known philosopher in the Joseon era. Lee Hwang wrote many theories and principles about Confucianism and also became the founder of the Tosan Academy. Lee Hwang was one of the members of the Sarim philosopher group who was against the rule of nobles at that time. With the establishment of the Tosan Academy to create morally good people to serve in the royal court, he was praised and his portrait is printed on 1,000 won banknotes.
Yulgok Lee Lee on 5,000 won banknotes
Yulgok Lee Lee was a new Confucian philosopher along with Lee Hwang and was also a politician at the time. At the royal event, Yulgok Lee Lee was given several positions as a Minister and director, including following the Chosol ambassador to the Chinese Empire at the time. He was also a writer of books on Confucianism. His ideas and works greatly influenced new Confucianism. His philosophical approach was more practical, with an emphasis on external experiences, including the bureaucracy of the time. The political concept of the Joseon Kingdom since the 16th century has been 193 pieces of his work and has been published 276 times. With his work and his good deeds in Korea, Yulgok Lee Lee was honored to have his portrait printed on a 5,000-won banknote.
King Sejong on 10,000 won banknotes
Sejong the Great was the fourth Korean monarch of the Joseon Dynasty. He was also the inventor of the Hangul Korean alphabet for Koreans because Korea had borrowed Chinese characters for hundreds of years. In addition to using letters, Sejong the Great also invented many more things such as a new calendar, rain gauge, wind force meter, sun gauges, and astronomical instruments which were considered to have been very advanced and civilized art technologies during his time. During his reign, the people lived well, causing Korea to highly praise him, which printed his portrait on 10,000 won banknotes.
Shin Saimdang on 50,000 won banknotes
Shin Saimdang was a famous artist during the reign of King Seonjo, the 4th king. She was a female artist with beautiful paintings and embroidery. Her work would focus on animals, insects, flowers, and fruits. Her pictures tell the story beautifully, conveying natural colors and a unique image of Confucianism. Shin Saimdang’s image was a good woman, pushing all his children to be successful and famous. She earned them the title of Korea’s model mother and was honored to have her portrait on 50,000 won banknotes.
